a. Describe the mechanism of discharging phenomena in gases at various pressures.

a. A silver wire 2.6 mm in diameter transfers a charge of 420 C in 80 min. Silver contains 5.8 x 1028 electrons per cubic meter. What is the current in the wire? What is the magnitude of the drift velocity of the electrons in the wire?

b. A cast iron sample exhibits a magnetic field of 0.5 T when the magnetic intensity H is 10 Am-1. Find the permeability of the cast iron at this value of H. What would be the field in air at this value of H?

c. The wiring of a refrigerator contains a starter capacitor. A voltage of amplitude 170 V and frequency 60Hz is applied across the capacitor to produce a current amplitude of 0.85 A. What capacitance C is required?

10. Answer, in brief, any TWO numerical questions (2×4=8)

a. An electron moves in a circular path of radius 20 cm in a magnetic field of 2 x 10-3 T. What is the speed of the electron? What is the p.d. through which the electron must be accelerated to acquire this speed? (e=1.6 x 10-19 C, m=9.11 x 10-31 kg)

b. Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of a 5 g moving away from at 340 m/s. Will the bullet exhibit wavelike properties?

c. The galaxy at a distance 6.2 x 106 light years is moving away from the earth with a speed of 86 x 105 m/s. Calculate the age of the universe.

11. An 80 m long brass rod is struck at one end. A person at the other end hears two sounds as a result of two longitudinal waves, one travelling in metal rod and the other travelling in the air. What is the time interval between the two sounds?

(the speed of sound in air is 344 m/s And Young’s modulus of brass=9 x 1010 Nm-2, density of brass 8.6 x 103 kgm-3)

12. In Michelson rotating prism method, the distance between, the rotating prism and the distant mirror is measured to be 45 km. A minimum speed of 416.7 rev/s for the rotation of the prism is needed to view the source in the same position as when the prism is at rest. Calculate the speed of light.
